Travelling alone can be a little daunting, especially the first time.  If you’re toying with the idea of travelling by yourself but you’re not quite sure, let us put your mind at ease.

First off, cruising is a great option for solo travellers.  Why?  For a start, your travel arrangements are all taken care of.  You won’t be arriving in a dodgy train station in the middle of the night by yourself, trying to find your way to your hotel with a taxi driver that seems to be taking all the back streets through town.  Dining is easy as you’ll be seated with other guests which is a great way to mix and mingle so you won’t be left on your own, and excursions are done mainly in groups so it’s a great way to meet other people. 

There may also be the option to attend a pre-cruise cocktail party where you can meet other people before boarding the ship.  This isn’t available on every cruise or cruise line but definitely worth attending if possible.

The main drawback to travelling alone is usually price as you often pay double the cost (being the full room cost instead of sharing this with someone else).  However, many cruise lines are addressing this issue and reducing the solo traveller cost to make it more affordable.  Some will also offer a “share” option where they will match you up with another solo traveller of the same sex so that you pay the twin rate.  Of course, this makes it more affordable and if you’re an easy-going person and able to adapt to a stranger’s idiosyncrasies in a confined space, this is a great option. 

There are also decided benefits to travelling alone.  You can do what you want, when you want without having to please anyone else!  You can choose which excursions you would like to do, or return to the ship when you are ready without waiting for anyone else.  There are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other guests or spend some time reading a book or in your own company.  Travelling alone means your holiday becomes all about you.
