When you think of Tahiti, usually you picture turquoise lagoons, white sand beaches, palm trees and overwater bungalows and you would be right – Tahiti’s islands are full of stunning island-dotted lagoons. But there’s more to Tahiti than just lazy days relaxing on the beach.
Each island is subtly different from the others. Huahine, for example, is known as the Garden Island with rich fertile land that yields bountiful crops of vanilla, bananas and various melons, not to mention beautiful flowers and lush forests. Raiatea, on the other hand, is known for its archaeological significance. Migrating Polynesians set off from the Taputaputea marae on Raiatea, bound for new adventures on new islands throughout the Pacific. Taha’a is known for its vanilla farms and spectacularly beautiful lagoons, and Fakaraava is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with incredible marine life in a pristine lagoon.
Further afield, you have the remote and stunning Marquesas Islands with a landscape of craggy mountains and plunging ravines and the Gambier Islands, raised (as legend has it) from the ocean floor by the demi-god Maui resulting in a dramatic vista of mountains overlooking a spectacular lagoon.
Tahiti has something for everyone whether you prefer a fly-and-flop vacation or whether you enjoy a good hike, bike ride or exploring. There is plenty to do and see in the islands but they’re also very good at lulling you into a deep state of relaxation! Resorts throughout the islands boast beautiful overwater bungalows where you can watch the marine life swimming by and enjoy a tropical cocktail accompanied by a sensational island sunset.
But let us let you into a little secret.
You can have your own floating bungalow when you book a Tahitian cruise. You can relax on your balcony and enjoy the sunset, cocktail in hand, watching the marine life and feeling that warm evening breeze just as you would in an overwater bungalow. The added bonus is that all of your meals (and very often all of your drinks) are also included in the price! You also get to visit more than one island and the per-day cruising cost is often considerably less than the nightly rate of an overwater bungalow! Winning all round!
