Sometimes when a cruise itinerary focuses on one specific region, like “Manila to Darwin” aboard Silver Cloud, it naturally leads us to think about other places in Southeast Asia that deserve just as much attention.
In this article, we’re highlighting a journey that moves from the city skylines of Hong Kong, through the coral-blue seas of the Philippines, across the rainforest-covered landscapes of Malaysia and on to Singapore, the so-called “Garden City”.
Southeast Asia is an extraordinary region, full of colour, flavour and contrast. It’s also where we’re featuring a unique 15-day luxury expedition from Hong Kong to Singapore aboard Silver Muse.
This is a journey centred around wildlife encounters, protected sanctuaries and tropical rainforests, alongside time spent exploring vibrant coastal cities and island landscapes.
What makes it especially appealing is the flexibility we also wanted to offer. The pace is relaxed, giving you time to fully experience each destination, with the option to extend your holiday before or/and after the cruise so everything feels unhurried and well balanced.
Hong Kong to Singapore via the Philippines and Malaysia
Silver Muse calls into Hong Kong as the first port of call and embarkation point for this expedition, a city where future and tradition sit side by side. Perhaps best seen in its striking skyline, where tall modern buildings are designed with open spaces said to let spirit dragons move freely from the hills to the harbour. It’s a city of striking contrasts, where traditional fishing villages and busy street-food markets sit alongside rooftop bars, skyline views and bright harbour light shows.
Once on board this ship, the first of its class in the Silversea fleet, take time to settle in and enjoy the onboard facilities as the cruise begins at a relaxed pace. A full day at sea follows, giving you space to relax and take it easy before arriving at the next port, Keelung City on Taiwan’s north coast. Known as the country’s second-largest port, it also offers easy access to Taipei, with its striking skyline of glittering lights and modern skyscrapers. This is a full day to explore the city, from temples such as Bao-An Temple, a place of colourful artistry, to its many bustling markets, where the air is filled with the aromas of open-fire cooking and sizzling street food. From fried oysters to chicken and fish pastries, the city offers a rich mix of flavours and traditions.
The next couple of days are spent at sea, offering time to relax or catch up on whatever you’ve been meaning to do. Whether that’s heading to the gym, visiting the spa, watching for whales, enjoying a good book or simply topping up your tan, these sea days provide the perfect balance to the more active days spent exploring ashore.
The itinerary then leads to the Philippines, beginning in Manila, the country’s bustling capital. There’s plenty to discover in these bustling streets, where the food is a highlight and the friendly locals are always ready to help.
From here, the ship continues to Coron in Palawan for the next part of the journey, where rock formations rise from turquoise seas, framed by endless stretches of golden sand and vibrant underwater life. For snorkeling lovers, it’s impossible not to dive into these clear waters and explore colourful coral gardens, both soft and hard, alongside schools of tropical fish such as parrotfish, clownfish, angelfish and butterflyfish. Lake Barracuda offers a unique diving experience, where you can swim through a mix of fresh and saltwater and feel the sudden changes in temperature as you move. Coron is a unique, remote island paradise and something that must be seen to be believed!
The following day brings discovery in Palawan’s capital, Puerto Princesa, named by the Spanish and known for its rich, green natural surroundings. At its heart lies the famous underground river, where emerald waters cut through limestone and flow in near darkness for five miles, framed by stalactites and intricate rock formations. Above ground, the scenery is just as striking, with tropical beaches, rainforest-covered waterfalls, and island bays rich in natural life, where monkeys and monitor lizards can often be seen in the wild. It is also a hidden gem for snorkeling in crystal-clear turquoise waters, as well as sampling local flavours such as fresh seafood, kinilaw (a Filipino-style ceviche), tropical fruits and the more adventurous specialty of ‘Tamilok’, a mangrove woodworm typically served raw in a ceviche-style preparation.
Back into international waters the following day, the voyage continues at sea towards Malaysia, with the next stop in Sandakan, Sabah.
Sandakan is a place of extraordinary wildlife, where you may encounter orangutans moving through the rainforest canopy and elusive sun bears sheltering in dense forest. Visits to rehabilitation centres are a highlight, offering the chance to come face to face with orangutans and see the unusual proboscis monkey, known for its distinctive long, swinging nose. The region is also a major exporter of palm oil and cocoa, and its coastal fishing communities offer a chance to sample freshly prepared local dishes such as butter prawns, seafood broths and fried squid. It’s another amazing stopover that makes this cruise so special.
After another day at sea, the voyage continues to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah where the wildlife experience carries on amid dense rainforest and rich natural surroundings. To gain insight into North Borneo’s diverse cultures, venture into the jungle to visit traditional villages and learn about life in these remote communities, along with the history and stories of the region’s tribal heritage.
Offshore, scattered islands and sandy beaches offer excellent dive sites, while gentle river rafting along winding waterways provides a relaxed way to experience Sabah’s lush scenery and abundant wildlife.
Following memorable stopovers in Malaysia, the ship sets sail for Singapore with a couple of relaxing days at sea ahead. This time at sea offers the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy the ship’s wide range of amenities at your own pace before arriving in one of Asia’s most dynamic and forward-thinking cities.
Arrival in Singapore marks the final destination of the journey, a futuristic cityscape where modern life meets nature in perfect balance. Designed with space to breathe, it’s home to lush outdoor parks, striking indoor gardens and beautifully planned green spaces set among the skyscrapers of the “City of Gardens.”
Singapore’s cuisine reflects its rich cultural mix, blending Indian, Chinese, Indonesian and Malay influences into one vibrant culinary scene. From elegant dining in sky-high restaurants to an evening cocktail overlooking the illuminated skyline, the city offers a memorable final experience.
While this is where the cruise comes to an end, Ultimate Cruising also offers full flexibility, including free nights for those who want to extend their stay or continue traveling so you can enjoy the journey in a way that suits you best.
