Greenland Will Leave You Spellbound
If you’re a cruising veteran who has soaked up the sun in the South Pacific, marvelled at Alaska’s glaciers and sojourned on the Mediterranean, where do you go next? If you’re looking for a new destination, something a little bit different to what you’ve seen before … consider Greenland! It’s on every savvy traveller's lips and now’s the time to see it for yourself.
Think isolated communities in villages only accessible by boat, mountainscapes and fjords, glaciers, icebergs and more. Picture colourful wooden cottages, the midnight sun or spectacular northern lights. Imagine the brilliant blue hues of ice, harbour and sky contrasting with vast, unpopulated expanses of countryside. The world’s largest non-continental island, also with the world’s lowest population density, is a sight to behold.
Discover the distinctive looking (and smelling!) muskoxen, perhaps an arctic fox, caribou, reindeer or even a polar bear. And marvel at the sloping icecap that covers 80% of Greenland, rendering it unhabitable by humans.

For this reason, cruising Greenland is an ideal option. Villages are dotted along the coastline with virtually no roads between. You won’t find a railway, nor inland waterways meaning that the vast majority of transportation is by boat (and by dog sled in the north and east).
There are several options for cruising Greenland. Some begin in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen and spend the majority of their time exploring the Greenland coast. Others will combine Greenland with Iceland, or some will start or end further afield. Cruise ships visiting Greenland also vary in size from the larger liners to the smaller boutique vessels taking fewer passengers.
