Introducing Coral Sea by Silversea

Introducing Coral Sea by Silversea

We’re super excited to tell you about a new Silversea cruise itinerary that has the Ultimate team buzzing over. Starting in Port Vila, Vanuatu and ending in Cairns, this luxury expedition cruise takes in several islands in Vanuatu, New Caledonia and the Whitsunday Islands.

So what’s the big deal over this cruise? Aside from the spectacular tropical setting, the luxuriously warm temperatures and the decadence of the Silversea service, this cruise is going to take you places you’ve never been before. Pentecost Island, Tanna, Ambryn Island, Mystery Island and more… and it’s the unique culture and traditions on each island that makes this cruise so amazing.

For example, Pentecost Island has a strong and vibrant culture, as you can imagine. You’ll be welcomed with singing and dancing and the opportunity to learn about this incredible traditional life on a remote island. Pentecost Island is also the home of the legendary land divers. Held once a year in a private ceremony (unfortunately not part of your cruise), these incredibly brave men dive off rustically built towers up to 30 metres high with just tree vines attached to their ankles. The annual ritual is believed to ensure a prolific yam harvest – the higher you jump, the better the harvest.

Whilst on Tanna Island, you’ll also have the opportunity to see the world’s most accessible active volcano, Mount Yasur.

Mount Yasur has been erupting nearly continuously for the last three years and was apparently what attracted Captain Cook’s attention back in 1744. With exotic black sand beaches, majestic volcano, rainforests, coffee plantations, hot springs, blue holes and waterfalls, Tanna is a visual wonder.

But it doesn’t stop there. Ambryn (the island of magic), Makura (small and easy going), Aniwa (an uplifted coral platform), Aneityam (resting on two coalescing volcanoes) and Mystery (excellent swimming and snorkelling) Islands are all ports of call. You’ll have the opportunity to meet the local people and delight in their wide smiles and easy going persona.

Vanuatu is an admirably resilient island community. Having survived several cyclones in recent years, and suffered considerable damage, the way the Melanesian people rally and rebuild is quite simply a testament to their irrepressible spirit. Experiencing their inherent heritage and culture is a privilege and one that will leave lasting memories.
